Childbirth education classes

Childbirth education classes are a good way to learn what happens during labor and birth and how to prepare for it. Your obstetrician or midwife can help direct you to a childbirth education class that is a good match for you and the kind of birth you expect. These classes meet over the course of a few weeks or months. They will inform you about the labor and delivery process and teach you how to help it go smoothly. Women’s Health Associates offers a program of prepared childbirth instruction at our Connecticut Childbirth & Women’s Center. These classes meet regularly and you can register for a class by calling the birth center at 748-6000.

Lactation education classes

Although breastfeeding is a natural process, it may take some practice and patience to master. Mothers and babies have to learn together. To help give you a good start, during pregnancy tell your obstetrician or midwife that you plan to breastfeed. We will examine your breasts and answer any questions you may have. During labor, remind us and your nurses that you plan to breastfeed. They can help you get started right after delivery. If possible, nurse in the first hour after your baby is born. At this time, your newborn is most alert and ready to suck. Later, your baby may be too sleepy to nurse well.

We are also pleased to offer formal lactation education classes by a certified lactation consultant. Breastfeeding mothers can learn the necessary essentials to ensure a positive experience for them and their infants. Lactation support is also available after your baby is born.
