Gynecology - Essure permanent birth control

Essure is a technique to provide women permanent birth control without the need for surgery and general anesthesia. Essure is a form of tubal ligation, performed in our office with a fraction of the risk, discomfort, and inconvenience.

Micro-Insert RingDr. Kenneth Blau was the first physician in Connecticut to complete the course of training required to become an "Essure Accredited Provider." Now over 5 years later, Women's Health Associates remains the only Essure Accredited Practice in the state.

Essure is a truly revolutionary form of permanent birth control, performed in our office in only a few minutes. Conventional tubal ligation procedures are performed in operating rooms under general anesthesia, and requires entering the abdominal cavity, risking damage to vital structures. The Essure procedure is performed by passing a tiny filament into the fallopian tubes through the cervix, without any incision whatsoever. This micro-insert Essureconsists an inner fibrous core that causes the lining to of the fallopian tube to block off, using the body's natural healing process. An out coil holds the Essure in place for the three months necessary to seal off the tubes completely. A simple test performed in the hospital radiology department leaves no doubt that tubal blockage has been achieved.

Essure ProcedureAt Women's Health Associates, we perform the Essure procedure in our hysteroscopy procedure room. Hysteroscopy consists of using a fiberoptic scope to view inside the cavity of the uterus. The openings of the fallopian tubes are visualized in order to pass the Essure devices into each side.

The Essure system was 99.80% effective after 4 years of follow up and has been demonstrated to be 99.74% effective at 5 years follow up with a small portion of the women undergoing clinical studies. Five-year follow up of all patients in clinical trials is ongoing. For more information, consult the Essure website: www.essure.com.
